Heartbreak in Hattiesburg: LSU falls to Southern Miss. in Game 7

The LSU Tigers were not able to repeat their late game heroics in an elimination game against Southern Mississippi, as the hosts beat the Tigers in a nail biter.

After a lead-off home run to start the game, the Golden Eagles looked set to take control of this game. The Tigers answered back in style, however, with three runs in the bottom of the first and thanks to a Cade Doughty home run in the third, LSU took a 4-1 lead against the home team.

This momentum did not last long and Southern Miss. took advantage of LSU’s poor pitching and scored 6 unanswered runs, rounded off by 2 RBI’s after Rodrigo Montenegro hit a single in the top of the 7th.

But just like the rest of the time the Tigers spent in Hattiesburg, they kept fighting. Jay Johnson’s men rallied in the bottom of the 7th, with the help of a Gavin Dugas solo home run, and tied the game 7-7.

While it seemed like LSU was set to repeat their brave performance as they did on Saturday, as they came back from a 6-2 lead to win in extra innings, they wouldn’t be that lucky.

A sacrifice fly in the top of the 9th for Southern Miss. and with the Tigers not able to get a hit to end the game, the Golden Eagles won their regional and will now host a super regional against Ole Miss.
