Gov. Edwards allows bill to pass banning transgender women from sports

After finishing a legislative session on Monday, June 6, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards addressed the Louisiana Legislature and announced his pleasure at a successful session, only with a few exceptions. One of those exceptions was the passing of a bill that bans transgender women from sports in the state of Louisiana.

This new law will ban all transgender women attending elementary and secondary schools, as well as universities, that are funded by the state from participating in any all women sports.

Gov. Edwards turned down similar legislation previously, but this time felt that a veto would be pointless and quickly overturned. Gov. Edwards was still disappointed with the outcome of the vote, nonetheless.

"I have allowed that bill to become law without my signature. Not because I thought the bill was good, you all know my views on it have not changed," Gov. Edwards said.

Gov. Edwards also pointed out that there has yet to be a transgender woman to participate in an all-woman sport, making the bill seem to the Governor pointless.
