After impressive recruiting week, D-Line Coach Cain says LSU sells itself

While LSU campus may be quieter right now than it will be come fall, the Tigers will be celebrating this week after having 6 incoming freshmen commit for the 2023 season. No one will be happier than the Tiger’s defensive line coach Jamar Cain, who will be using 4 of those players on his line.

The incoming players Cain will be in charge of include defensive linemen Dashawn Womack and Darron Reed and edges Joshua Mickens and Jaxon Howard. All of these players are 4-stars coming out of high school and what’s more impressive about this coup is that all of these recruits committed within the past week.

This didn’t happen over night, however, as Cain said that he frequently works with potential recruits for years at a time.

“I think people don’t realize you spend years at this,” Cain said while speaking with the Jordy Culotta Show. “It doesn’t go over six months, you target these kids as sophomores and going into their junior year, going into their senior year. It's months of work, years of work, when you're on vacation, taking a phone call Christmas day, taking a phone call, never not taking a text message. You're always on call.”

Cain spoke previously with the Jordy Culotta show about the importance bringing back tradition to the LSU D-line, and he is starting to capitalize on his position in one of the most well-known defenses in college football.

While Cain believes LSU “sells itself,” he has also started to “sell” the city of Baton Rouge itself. With both the culture and fan base of Baton Rouge, Cain hopes his recruits see the importance of that.

“For me, the biggest thing that I'm selling is you're in a major city,” Cain said. “Baton Rouge is not a college town. It's a thriving city, it's a multicultural city. It's diverse; the campus is diverse…I'm selling a lifestyle, a city, a fan base.”

Along with the four players going to the D-line, LSU also got commits from cornerback Ashton Stamps, from Metarie, LA, and linebacker Xavier Atkins from Jonesboro, LA.

Cain did not speak about any more recruits coming into the Bayou, but talked further about his relationships with his fellow coaches and settling into his new position and life. For the full interview with Jordy Culotta, click here.
